SLE is an award-winning, conservation-focused handicrafts program built on a straightforward idea: women in communities living alongside snow leopards receive fair-wage opportunities to produce and sell handcrafted products, in exchange for a community …
Our team’s story with the pheasants formally began in 2020. At the time, I was an undergraduate student in India with a meandering set of interests, slowly finding my way towards conservation and ethology. In an effort to move towards this goal, I was …
April 23 is Pallas’s Cat Day! This small cat with a big attitude is a distant relative of our beloved snow leopard and lives in the same high mountain habitats. Because of this overlap, Snow Leopard Trust partners with the Royal Zoological Society of …
In addition to working with snow leopards, I also lead the lynx research in Sweden. By the mid-1900’s, large carnivores had been almost exterminated across Europe, with only small populations surviving in remote mountainous areas. The lynx in Sweden was no …
Snow Leopard Trust has expanded its conservation work to Nepal. Thanks to the generosity of our incredible supporters, we have been able to expand our reach into yet another critical snow leopard landscape. Over the past year, with the support of SLT’s …
In the end, his years caught up with him. In many parts of the world, large carnivores are killed by humans long before their bodies have a chance to simply wear out. The fact that this one survived to be considered elderly isn’t just luck. Experts say …
What began as a single visit grew into a decades-long partnership built on a radical but simple truth: lasting conservation is fundamentally about people. This partnership included a 20+ year informal mentorship of Cincinnati Zoo leadership by SORALO …
Updated February 2026. When are snow leopards old enough to breed? Based on data available from the wild, it appears that female snow leopards are ready to have their own cubs by age 3 or 4. Male snow leopards are likely sexually mature by age 2 or 3 but …
Our GPS collars work on a simple principle: they collect approximately 20 months of location data, then automatically drop off for retrieval. The result? Our research teams can gather precise data about the movement, ecology, and behavior of these elusive …
Decoding the first weeks of life: New data from snow leopard dens Last summer, our research team made history with two extraordinary visits to snow leopard dens, documenting five healthy cubs. These events are exceptionally rare; over nearly two decades of …
Here, life is shaped by the mountains, and generations of families have lived in harmony with the land and its wildlife. One of the area’s most treasured crafts is yak fiber doormats, and the skills to create them have been passed down through many …

On a bitingly cold February afternoon in 2022, at -25 degrees Celsius, Kalzang Gurmet, field manager for Nature Conservation Foundation (NCF) in Spiti, sat cross-legged on a floor mattress in our unpretentious homestay. We were in Kibber, a high-altitude …
Results Dagina The Matriarch: You’re the backbone of your community, and everyone knows it. Like Dagina, who successfully raised many cubs across five litters in the harsh Mongolian desert, you have an incredible capacity for nurturing and protecting those …
Using GPS collar data, our team investigated the locations of GPS “clusters” where our collared cats spent extended time, often indicating a kill site or den. This year, for the first time, we analyzed clusters from F12 and F19, two females with young cubs …
After nearly two decades without a national-scale gathering, Mongolia's snow leopard community came together recently to address an urgent reality: the threats facing these cats have fundamentally changed, and so must the response. The National Forum …
Thanks to a new initiative by our partner organization, the Nature Conservation Foundation, a growing group of Indigenous women has transitioned from viewing snow leopards as threats to actively tracking them, identifying individuals by their rosette …
Cameras capture only a glimpse into the lives of these majestic cats. Still, even these glimpses provide crucial information about their population, reproductive habits, communication patterns and survival rates that would be nigh impossible to gather by …
Using collar data, we’ve been searching for kills made by the two female snow leopards that gave birth this summer, F12 and F19. While doing this, we have noticed that they employed two very different parenting strategies. F12 appears to take more risks …
You’ve probably heard us say that there may be as few as 4,000 snow leopards left in the wild today. But what about a million years ago? New research from a study between Stanford University, Snow Leopard Trust and other collaborators suggests that snow …
