NEW DECK ADDS TO BEACH EXPERIENCE

MIDDLETOWN, RI (MAY 18, 2026) – Every summer, Middletown’s goal is to improve the overall experience at its beaches.

With the addition of a new 700-square-foot deck to the existing pavilion at Second Beach, consider this aim met.

Members of the Beach Commission and town Operations & Facility Manager Will Cronin said EW Burman of Warwick more than delivered on the project on the beach side of the building at 315 Sachuest Point Road.

“The project really turned out great, better than we could have expected,” Cronin said. “We are really happy with the way it looks and are excited to see how folks like it.”

“The deck at the main building was expanded to provide a better flow for patrons as they approach the building, as well as to give patrons a larger area to relax and enjoy the beach experience,” Beach Commission member Bill Seiple said. “Those wishing to use the facilities have a clear picture of how to access that area and those wishing to use the concession stand can easily approach that area.”

Every nice day between Memorial Day and Labor Day, Second Beach attracts thousands of residents and visitors from across the region to its sandy shores with gentle rolling waves.

Seasonal beach parking passes will be on sale — weather permitting — today through Friday, May 22 at noon-4 pm from the main parking lot at Second Beach.

The town — and the volunteer Beach Commission  — work hard to make sure every patron enjoys their time at the beach, whether it’s for one day or the entire summer season.

An idea of the Beach Commission, the deck will improve flow and access to the pavilion itself. Cronin said the deck will also offer a place for beachgoers to sit and eat as well as shade to get out of the bright sun. Money from the town's Beach Fund was used to pay for the project, not tax dollars.

“The addition created about 700 square feet of new  space, more than doubling the area,” Cronin said. “This will give more space to enjoy the food and views while other patrons wait for their food or chance to place an order.”

“A shade structure will be added to allow users to enjoy a meal even if foul weather strikes,” Seiple said. “The structure will have drop-down sides that will make for a more comfortable area even if the wind is blowing the sand towards the building.”

The deck area will be available to rent off hours daily after 5 pm, Cronin said. Those interested in using the space should contact beach  management for more information.

Recently, the Town Council awarded another contract to the existing food concessionaire Salty's Burgers & Seafood of Narragansett. This contracted service runs Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day from 2026 to 2030 — including the two one-year options.

Asked if there were other projects in the works, Cronin said there was nothing in the pipeline at this point, but that didn’t mean others could crop up quickly.

“While there are no projects in the works, the Beach Commission is always looking for ways to improve the building for our patrons and staff,” Cronin said. “This project was a great way to expand the space and see how it will be used.”
