Bridge repairs at Kailua Beach Park, Ironwood  tree removal at 380 Kailua Road

Two separate projects to repair the guardrails along the pedestrian bridge spanning the Ka‘elepulu Stream at Kailua Beach Park, and remove a large, unsafe Ironwood tree on Kailua Road, are scheduled to begin next week, April 27, 2026.

At Kailua Beach Park, the guardrail work will require the closure of the makai pedestrian/bicycle access to the bridge during construction, with the path along the mauka-side of the vehicular bridge remaining open. Vehicular traffic is not expected to be significantly impacted, though motorists are urged to drive carefully while passing the work site and to heed the directions of special duty officers.

Watercraft will be placed underneath the immediate worksite to ensure safety and reduce environmental impact of the project, with enough room provided for other craft to pass along the stream underneath the bridge.

The nearly $702,000 contract for the guardrail work was awarded to Kaikor Construction Company, Inc. The project is expected to be finished before Fall 2026.

Along Kailua Road, a large Ironwood tree is scheduled to be removed by contracted arborists at 380 Kailua Road near Aoloa Street. The tree, measuring more than 5-feet in diameter and 65-feet tall, was determined to be structurally unsound, having outgrown its planting space while impacting underground utilities and other infrastructure.

The removal of the tree is expected to take two weeks, with the $29,450 contract for its removal tasked by H.T.M Contractors, Inc. Motorists along Kailua Road should expect delays, with the closure of the makai-lane of Kailua Road expected during the daytime work hours. The need for occasional closures of the entire road are possible.
