California Men’s Colony (CMC) in San Luis Obispo hosted its annual Day for Atonement event in the Protestant Chapel on Friday, Aprill 17. The event brings together incarcerated persons and staff for a program centered on reflection and personal accountability.
The event included remarks from incarcerated speakers, CMC administrative staff, San Luis Obispo County District Attorney Dan Dow and others.
Dow’s message focused on redemption, forgiveness, and personal transformation. He spoke about the importance of seeking forgiveness and taking responsibility for past actions, while emphasizing that change is possible through a commitment to a higher purpose. His remarks encouraged participants to reflect on their past, make intentional choices moving forward, and align their lives with principles that support accountability, growth, and positive change.
The program as a whole reinforced the importance of acknowledging harm and understanding the broader impact of criminal behavior. It also provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on how their future choices can demonstrate accountability and growth.
On April 18, incarcerated participants took part in a 5K walk across all facility yards. The walk was intended as a time for reflection, with a focus on recognizing victims and reinforcing the purpose behind the Day for Atonement.
This event is part of CMC’s ongoing efforts to support rehabilitative programming that encourages accountability and positive behavioral change within the incarcerated population.
