Sweden and United States extend outer space cooperation
SWEDEN, December 12 - Published
Minister for Defence Pål Jonson has signed an extension of the existing framework agreement with the United States on cooperation in the research and use of outer space for peaceful purposes. The agreement, established to promote scientific and technological development, builds on the long-standing partnership between our countries on space issues.
“Space is both a field for research and a vital public resource. Space research provides unique insights into the universe and drives innovation that creates jobs and export opportunities. At the same time, space technologies strengthen our military capabilities and the resilience of our total defence. By continued cooperation with the United States and actively supporting the growth of Swedish space companies, we secure both Sweden’s security and our long-term competitiveness,” says Mr Jonson.
“Space activities play an increasingly important role in various essential services, and space research provides us with valuable knowledge about the universe and an increased ability to innovate and benefit society. Through continued cooperation with the US, the world’s largest space nation, we are promoting the Swedish space sector. The Government invests heavily in the space field. In the past year, through the research policy bill we have launched three national space programmes and a space research school, which will further increase opportunities for Swedish space actors to become attractive partners for American actors,” says Minister for Upper Secondary School, Higher Education and Research Lotta Edholm.
Purpose and significance of the Agreement
The extension of the Agreement means that Sweden and the US will continue to cooperate on space research and the use of space. This collaboration helps develop innovations that benefit both society and industry, while promoting international peace and security. As an example of the Agreement’s cooperation, the Swedish National Space Agency, via the Swedish company ECAPS, is financing the development of a rocket engine system consisting of an environmentally friendly fuel and associated engine. It is intended to replace the highly toxic hydrazine-based fuel systems that are currently most common on the market.
The importance of space for total defence
By enhancing expertise in space research and technology, the conditions for robust and secure systems that are crucial for both civil and military defence, are improved. Access to advanced space infrastructure can, for example, contribute to better crisis preparedness, monitoring of natural disasters, and secure communication in a heightened state of alert.
Mr Jonson signed the Agreement during his participation at the North Star Space Forum in Washington DC. In his speech, he stressed the importance of space as a platform for cooperation.
