Sweden and Canada launch Strategic Partnership

SWEDEN, November 18 - Published

Canada and Sweden have entered into a Strategic Partnership, which was launched on 18 November, during the State Visit to Canada by Their Majesties The King and Queen. It builds on Canada and Sweden’s common interests and values, and will further deepen and broaden bilateral cooperation.

“Canada and Sweden enjoy a close relationship, based on shared interests and values. We are transatlantic partners, NATO Allies and like-minded Arctic nations. The Strategic Partnership will contribute to strengthening our security and economic ties, and will foster collaboration in innovation and research, not least in the green and digital transition. In today’s increasingly challenging environment, cooperation between like-minded countries is more important than ever,” says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

The Strategic Partnership was signed by Mr Kristersson and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. It is a political framework that aims to further deepen relations between Canada and Sweden; it unlocks significant opportunities for both countries and strengthens their capacity to address joint challenges. It covers a wide range of policy areas, such as economic development and trade, security and defence, Arctic cooperation, science and innovation, and climate, environment and energy.

Canada and Sweden will turn the Strategic Partnership into concrete action from the outset. The two countries will intensify cooperation on political, military and economic support for Ukraine. An enhanced strategic dialogue on security and defence, including societal resilience, civil preparedness and the Swedish total defence concept, will be established. Trade and investment between Canada and Sweden are growing rapidly, and business, commercial and industrial ties will deepen to foster economic growth and job creation.

The Strategic Partnership represents a long-term political commitment. As Canada and Sweden advance their relations through its implementation, bilateral cooperation will continue to evolve and generate concrete results.
