Location Confirmed For New Joint-Use Harbour Landing Elementary School

CANADA, March 24 - Released on March 23, 2023

The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to announce that the site of the new West Harbour Landing school has been confirmed. Eleven acres of land located on the corner of Gordon Road and Campbell Street in south Regina has been selected as the site for the new joint-use elementary school.

"I am very pleased that we could reach this important milestone, one that I know all stakeholders but especially the students and families of Harbour Landing have been waiting for since we first announced this project in March 2020," Education Minister Dustin Duncan said. "The province is experiencing strong economic and population growth and schools are seeing increased enrolments, which is why our government continues to invest in new schools like this one so they may serve our fastest growing communities for generations to come."

A Memorandum of Understanding has been co-signed by the Ministry of Education, the City of Regina, the Regina Public School Division, and the Regina Catholic School Division, which outlines that the City of Regina will be responsible for acquiring the land while costs for servicing the land will be shared by the province and city. The province and school boards are currently working together to determine the servicing requirements, in consultation with the City of Regina.

"We value our collaborative partnership with the Government of Saskatchewan and Regina's school boards in helping to find solutions to better serve the residents of Regina's Harbour Landing and South communities," Regina Mayor Sandra Masters said. "Through the process of determining the site for this new joint-use facility, we've strengthened our relationship for improved future planning to ensure youth in Regina have access to the spaces that they need to learn, connect and grow."

The new joint-use facility is expected to be open by 2026, and design is still underway, in consultation with the community based on enrolment projections from the Regina Catholic and Public School Divisions. It will provide state-of-the-art learning environments operated by both school divisions and is expected to accommodate a total of approximately 850 students.  The facility will also include a 90-space child care centre, and a community space with a kitchen area that can be used both by schools as well as the broader Harbour Landing community.

"We heard clearly from families that more educational space was needed in the rapidly growing Harbour Landing community," Regina Board of Education Chair Tara Molson said. "Today's announcement demonstrates that Boards of Education, the city and the province can together work toward building the needed educational and community spaces that will benefit students and their families for decades to come."

"This is an exciting step forward in a journey we've been anticipating for a long time," Regina Catholic School Division Board Chair Shauna Weninger said. "The focus of Regina Public Schools and Regina Catholic Schools has been on the needs of our students and school staff. It is a huge blessing to be moving forward with a new school that will allow us to meet the best interest of students and staff. Thank-you to the City of Regina, Ministry of Education and our united partners at Regina Public Schools for making this happen."

Since 2008, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed approximately $2.4 billion toward school infrastructure projects. These projects include 60 new schools and 30 major renovation projects with an additional five projects approved through the Minor Capital Renewal Program.
