OLYMPIA – Today, a collaborative report was published in the New England Journal of Medicine, co-authored by representatives from Snohomish Health District, Providence Regional Medical Center Everett, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Washington State Department of Health, and others. It details the clinical course and medical care provided to the Snohomish County patient with the first U.S. case of the 2019 novel coronavirus.

Discussed in the report is the patient’s travel history, his first symptoms, and how his symptoms changed over the time he was in the hospital. Details on the types of tests and treatments the patient received while he was hospitalized are also included. This detailed look into the care of this individual comes with the permission of the patient.

Information in the report is being shared to help public health officials and healthcare providers worldwide learn more about diagnosing and treating people with the 2019 novel coronavirus.

There is still a lot we don’t know about this new disease, but we hope that sharing this report shows how patients, public health officials, and health care providers can work together to keep people safe and treat people infected with novel coronavirus.

The patient should be recognized for his decision to voluntarily isolate himself, seek proper medical care, and allow the details of his private medical treatment to be made public so that the world may learn from his case, and advance our understanding of novel coronavirus.
