Liberty Tree Dedication On May 31
LIBERTY TREE DEDICATION ON MAY 31
MIDDLETOWN, RI (MAY 27, 2026) – Across the country, communities are gearing up for America’s 250th birthday this summer.
In Middletown, the 250 Commission has been spearheading local efforts to mark the momentous occasion right.
The volunteer group’s first big event is scheduled for this Sunday, May 31 with the dedication of a historic Liberty Tree from 2-4 pm at Paradise Valley Park, 141 Prospect Ave.
The event will feature a keynote speech by RI Secretary of State Gregg Amore, a historic open house, historical re-enactments, windmill tours and fun for all ages.
Town Council President Paul M. Rodrigues, Middletown 250 Commission Chair George Krol, US Rep. Gabe Amo, State Sen. Louis DiPalma, State Rep. Terri Cortvriend and Consul General Of Germany to the New England States Dr. Sonya Kreibich are scheduled to make remarks, among others.
“To commemorate and honor the 250th anniversary of America’s Declaration of American Independence on July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island’s 250th Commission is encouraging all Rhode Island communities to plant Liberty Trees in municipal public spaces,” Krol said. “Middletown has planted its Liberty Tree — a red maple, the official tree of the State of Rhode Island – at Paradise Valley Park.
“For Rhode Islanders, it is worth noting that, on May 4, 1776, two months before the July 4 Declaration, the General Assembly of Rhode Island passed a resolution formally renouncing allegiance to the King of Great Britain. Inhabitants of Middletown were active supporters, participants and combatants in the ensuing struggle for full independence from Britain. During two years of occupation by British and Hessian forces the town’s economy and population were devastated.
“After the war, Middletown quickly recovered and has since grown into the vibrant, prosperous community it is today, preserving its great natural beauty and honoring its history. The Liberty Tree symbolizes the liberty Middletowners strove for, fought for and sacrificed for 250 years ago. On May 31 we will honor the memory of these brave ancestors and dedicate ourselves to observing and defending the ideals and freedoms they bequeathed to us.”
Rich in history, Middletown has been planning events around the 250th anniversary for months.
On July 1, a big 250 Birthday bash is slated at Second Beach from 6:30-10 pm. The event at 315 Sachuest Point Road summertime hotspot will include games, music, food trucks and a fireworks extravaganza to close the family-friendly evening.
The town thanks BankNewport for its continued commitment to the community by providing an $8,000 donation to pay for the fireworks display.
There’s also a town-wide historical Scavenger Hunt underway now through June 19. To download a copy of the clues, visit https://mdl.town/250-Commission online.
