The first June meeting of the New Hanover County Board of Commissioners was packed with numerous rezoning considerations. A look at what took place is below …

Bond hearing rescheduled

Commissioners voted unanimously to ratify and approve a memorandum of understanding with the New Hanover Community Endowment, under which the Endowment will grant the county up to $116 million over ten years in support of school capital improvements. The grant supplements the county's investment in the New Hanover County Schools capital program that the proposed $320 million general obligation bond would fund, which goes before voters this November.

Because the grant affects the financial terms of the proposed bonds, Commissioners also voted unanimously to postpone the school bond public hearing, allowing the county's disclosures to be updated and giving the public time to review the latest information before commenting.

The public hearing has been rescheduled to the Board's next regular meeting on June 15 at 9 a.m. An official notice of the public hearing will be published no later than June 9.

Rezoning requests

Commissioners held a trio of public hearings related to property rezoning requests throughout the county.

The first was a request to rezone approximately 1.49 acres at 6230 Carolina Beach Road from R-15, Residential to a conditional Office and Institutional (O&I) district, allowing for use as a business center, private offices, or other professional activities. The request was unanimously approved.

Next, Commissioners considered a request to rezone approximately 1.14 acres at 7650 Market Street from B-2, Regional Business to a conditional B-2 district that would remove the Special Highway Overlay District. The request was unanimously denied.

Finally, Commissioners unanimously approved a request that would rezone approximately 1.01 acres of a 7.11-acre parcel at 924 N. Seabreeze Road from B-2, Regional Business to R-15, Residential, eliminating a split zoning of the parcel.

That’s not all … 

The final item of business on Monday was a quasi-judicial hearing to allow a special use permit for approximately 5.95 acres at 613 Valley Brook Road to be used for a wireless communication facility. The request was granted in a 4-1 decision, with Commissioner Walker dissenting.
