Oklahoma Summit Tackles Veterinary Shortage
OKLAHOMA CITY — Leaders from the veterinary industry and agriculture industry stakeholders recently gathered at the Oklahoma Rural and Food Animal Veterinary Shortage Summit to address the shortage of veterinarians in rural communities.
“The availability of large and food animal veterinarians in rural Oklahoma is a tremendous challenge,” said Sec. of Agriculture Blayne Arthur. “This issue directly impacts livestock producers and the agriculture community, but this is important for all Oklahomans. Veterinarians play a vital role in producing protein for our growing population. I’m encouraged by the work that is being done to bring large animal veterinarians to rural Oklahoma and the many stakeholders who are committed to that goal.”
Hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, the meeting featured expert panels and current resources aimed at creating a stronger, more vibrant veterinary workforce program that supports practitioners, farmers and rural economic development.
“Oklahoma must remain competitive when it comes to producing veterinarians and keeping Oklahoma students in Oklahoma,” said OSU President Dr. Jim Hess. “This is about destiny and legacy. It’s worth every single ounce of dedication, energy and resources.”
The summit follows a partnership with the Farm Journal Foundation, which aims to address the shortage through research and collaboration.
