Fire Driver Training at Blue Grass Army Depot
Fire Driver Training at Blue Grass Army Depot
Madison County Fire Department personnel recently trained at the Blue Grass Army Depot as part of their required Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC). BGAD Fire Department personnel worked alongside crews on fire truck vehicle operation in controlled scenarios designed to reflect real response conditions.
BGAD Assistant Fire Chief Elmo Adams, an EVOC-certified trainer, led the training over the course of several days. BGAD Fire Department personnel supported the training throughout.
Certification Requirements
Fire departments must certify driver training twice each year. In addition, both the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Kentucky state law require hands-on training before personnel can operate emergency vehicles.
This requirement ensures drivers meet safety standards and remain qualified to operate fire trucks in active response situations.
Vehicle Operation Skills
Firefighters focused on vehicle control, positioning, and situational awareness. Moreover, each scenario required drivers to think in real time and adjust to changing conditions, using cone-based courses to practice turning, positioning, and backing.
Because of this, the training reinforced skills that directly impact response time and safety on the road.

Strengthening Mutual Aid
Blue Grass Army Depot and Madison County maintain a mutual aid partnership, responding to assist one another when additional support is needed.
Training together strengthens coordination and builds familiarity between crews. Preparedness starts long before the call and takes shape through opportunities like this.
Responsibility Behind the Wheel
Operating a fire truck requires precision, awareness, and control. EVOC training prepares drivers to handle those demands in real-world response. This training supports safer roadways and strengthens emergency response across the community.
