National Nurses Day Proclamation
On May 6, 2026, the Judge/Executive Reagan Taylor and Madison County Fiscal Court officially proclaimed National Nurses Day, and urged citizens to honor all nurses for their dedication and service to keeping the people in our communities healthy.
From the Crimean War to our Community
The proclamation recognized Florence Nightingale, who founded modern nursing at the end of the 19th century. Thanks to her strict use of hand-washing while caring for wounded soldiers in the Crimean War, Nightingale and her helpers reduced the death rate from 42% to 2%, ushering in nursing as we know it today.
Recognizing the Work of Nurses
The proclamation recognized the dedication nurses demonstrate in clinics, hospitals, emergency rooms, urgent care centers, nursing homes, health departments, schools, universities, and private practices throughout our communities.
Administering shots, medication, performing physical exams, nursing wounds, and, in many cases, caring for dying patients are only a few of the many duties nurses perform every day.
