Alternative sites to be explored for O‘ahu’s first public kyudojo
After careful consideration, the Hawai‘i Kyudo Foundation (HKF) and the City and County of Honolulu will be seeking alternative sites for O‘ahu’s first public kyudojo as they suspend efforts to build the facility at Mau‘umae Nature Park in Kaimukī.
The project, which proposed building a multi-use recreational facility on 0.57 acres of underutilized park land at Mau‘umae, was previously paused in mid-April 2026. Though the effort received support from the area’s Neighborhood Board, additional public sentiment against the project and developing site conditions played a role in the decision to forgo Mau‘umae as a location of the kyudojo.
Though the facility would have primarily served as a training center (dojo) for the traditional Japanese martial art of archery (kyudo), its potential uses for the community would have been numerous as it planned to include a meeting room, parking, bathrooms, and native landscaping.
The revised details and possible location of a future kyudojo have yet to be determined. HKF still intends to build, donate, and help maintain the facility, with the City owning and operating it under the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation for all of O‘ahu.
We appreciate the patience and understanding of the project’s supporters, as HKF and the City search for a new location to realize this public-private partnership.
