Heavy rain expected Sunday, open shelters and half marathon road closures in effect
HONOLULU — The City and County of Honolulu continue to monitor weather conditions and respond to storm-related impacts across Oʻahu as a Flash Flood Watch remains in effect through 6 p.m. Monday, April 13.
Periods of heavy rain are expected Sunday, with moderate to heavy showers of 1” to 2” of rain per hour are forecast potentially through Monday morning. This creates the increased likelihood for additional flooding and landslides due to saturated ground and elevated stream levels. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
Emergency Shelters: Six City emergency shelters remain open across Oʻahu and will continue operations through at least Tuesday due to the ongoing weather threat and potential for additional rainfall. For the latest shelter information, visit: p.veoci.com/hnlshelter
Shelters are open to both residents and visitors and are pet-friendly. Individuals are encouraged to bring essential items including food, water, medications, and pet supplies. Case workers remain onsite to assist occupants with housing plans as conditions evolve.
Call Center Opening: To further assist the residents and visitors of O`ahu with immediate information on storm recovery and response, a call center has been established within the City’s Emergency Operation Center. The public is invited to call our dedicated team from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday at (808) 723-8960.
Roadways: The Hapalua Half Marathon is expected to impact roadways from Waikīkī and Kāhala through Downtown Sunday morning. Here are some tips on how to avoid the traffic:
- Avoid Waikīkī, Ala Moana, and Downtown areas Sunday morning if possible. Roads should be reopened around 9 a.m.
- Waikīkī-bound traffic on Kalākaua Ave. will be diverted onto Kūhiō Avenue at Ala Moana Blvd. Access Waikīkī through Kapahulu Ave.
- Access to Ala Moana Regional Park, Kewalo Basin Harbor, and Kaka`ako Waterfront Park will be limited by passing runners. Expect delays from 6 a.m. to 7 a.m.
