SUSPECTED ARSONIST ARRESTED IN EMANUEL COUNTY

A Toombs County man has been jailed on felony arson charges. Forty-nine-year-old Phillip Jones of Vidalia was arrested by Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) law enforcement officers and the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday, January 13, 2026.

Jones is accused of deliberately setting a 1.5-acre wildfire on Sunday, January 11 in a wooded area near the intersection of Fish Whitehead and Buck Corbin Roads. A passerby’s dash-cam recorded a suspicious vehicle fleeing the fire scene, which was reported to authorities. Georgia Forestry Commission rangers successfully contained the fire. Following an investigation, a warrant was issued and Jones was arrested by GFC law enforcement officers on Tuesday.

“GFC’s law enforcement team is meticulous and professional, and they work hand in hand with partner agencies statewide,” said Georgia Forestry Commission Director Johnny Sabo. “With Georgia’s wildfire potential running especially high right now, their rapid response could very well have prevented a serious disaster.”

Arson is one of the leading causes of wildfires in Georgia. Those who are convicted of arson face strict penalties under Georgia law. The violation carries a sentence of up to $50,000 or one to 20 years in prison.

The GFC maintains an Arson Hotline at 1-800-GA-TREES. For more information, visit GaTrees.org.
