In light of the recent severe weather, the Hawai‘i State Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs (DCCA) is sharing important resources to help those who experienced flood damage to their homes, automobiles and belongings.


What Is Flood Insurance?

Flood insurance is separate from standard homeowners or renters insurance. Most policies do not cover flood damage.

  • It is usually required only in high-risk flood zones
  • However, flooding can happen anywhere, even outside those zones. Because of this, all homeowners and renters should consider getting flood insurance

What Does Flood Insurance Cover?

A typical flood insurance policy helps pay for damage caused by rising water, including:

Structure of the Home

  • Foundation and walls
  • Electrical and plumbing systems
  • Built-in appliances

Essential Belongings

  • Appliances
  • Some personal property

What May NOT Be Covered?

Coverage depends on your policy, but commonly excluded or limited items include:

  • Landscaping (yards, plants, etc.)
  • Temporary housing or living expenses
  • High-value personal items (may need separate coverage)

If You Don’t Have Flood Insurance

If you experienced flood damage but don’t have coverage, you may still have options:

  • Federal disaster assistance (if a disaster is officially declared)
