The Government is tasking the Defence Materiel Administration to enhance protection of critical and emerging technologies from a national security perspective. This assignment aims to reinforce Sweden’s economic security in line with the National Security Strategy.

“Secure access to critical and emerging technologies is a cornerstone of our national security. The Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) is tasked with strengthening protection against improper technology transfer and securing supply chains, which is a necessary step for Sweden’s security and competitiveness”, says Minister for Defence Pål Jonson. 

Critical and emerging technologies that benefit defence and security are of vital importance, particularly given the current geopolitical context. 

The focus of the Government Defence agencies on sensitive technologies is of strategic significance to Sweden’s security and competitiveness. Capabilities in this field are also essential to Sweden’s standing as an international partner.

The Defence Materiel Administration is being tasked with enhancing protection of critical and emerging technologies in close cooperation with the Swedish Armed Forces and the Swedish Defence Research Agency.

This assignment includes increasing capabilities to prevent illicit technology transfer, secure access to critical and emerging technologies and reinforce supply chains. 

The tasks to the Defence Materiel Administration includes:

  • Lead risk and assessments of sensitive technologies from a national security perspective and contribute to method development in this area.
  • Identify and address critical material and component dependencies in defence materiel supply chains.
  • Strengthen the use of data-driven analysis, not least by adopting commercial tools.

No later than 22 April 2026, the Defence Materiel Administration is due to report to the Ministry of Defence what measures have been undertaken and present an analysis of additional measures needed to reinforce the development and protection of critical and emerging technologies. Subsequently, the Administration will outline this work in its annual reports.
