EU agrees on EUR 90 billion in support to Ukraine

At the final meeting of the European Council for 2025, held on 18 December, the EU heads of state and government agreed on financing for Ukraine for 2026 and 2027. This support will be financed through joint loans with the EU budget headroom as security. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson represented Sweden at the meeting.
In addition to Ukraine, the European Council also discussed the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework for the period 2028–2034. Sweden is pushing for the size of the EU’s long-term budget to be kept down, and for greater efficiency and greater focus on major joint issues such as the climate, migration, competitiveness and the threat from Russia.
The leaders also discussed the continued work on EU enlargement, events in the Middle East, EU security and defence, and migration. The agenda also featured competitiveness, with a focus on the geoeconomic situation and relations between the EU, the United States and China.
