GBI Arrests Epworth Man in Death Investigation
Epworth, Georgia (October 10, 2025)- The GBI has arrested and charged William Joseph Woods, age 58, of Epworth, GA, with Felony Murder, Malice Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Felony in connection to the death of Douglas Harper, age 41, of Epworth, GA.
On October 9, 2025, the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office requested the GBI to assist with a murder investigation in Epworth, Fannin County, GA.
On October 9, 2025, at about 7:15 p.m., Fannin County Deputies were dispatched to the 1300 block of Old Epworth Road in Fannin County in reference to a shots fired call. When Fannin County Deputies and McCaysville Police Department Officers arrived, Harper was found dead in the front yard of the home from an apparent gunshot wound. Woods was located on scene and was identified as the shooter. Woods was placed under arrest.
Woods was booked into the Fannin County Jail, where he remains incarcerated.
An autopsy will be conducted at the GBI Crime Lab.
Once the investigation is complete it will be given to the Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
