Bridge repairs to reduce westbound I-90 in Issaquah to a single lane for up to four weekends in September

ISSAQUAH – Westbound Interstate 90 in Issaquah will be reduced to a single lane to repair five bridges over a series of up to four weekends in September.

The first round-the-clock weekend lane reduction is scheduled from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, to 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 7. Up to three more weekend lane reductions will follow later in September, but wet weather may force work to be rescheduled.

Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will use the lane reductions to repair five bridges on westbound I-90 in Issaquah. This preventative maintenance will replace aging pavement and waterproof membranes and repair bridge expansion joints. The work will extend the useful life for these bridges, which were originally built in 1970 and 1971.

The repairs require up to three lanes to close to create enough room to replace vital bridge components – half a bridge at a time – leaving only a single lane for westbound I-90 traffic.

People traveling in the area during the lane reductions should expect significant delays or consider alternate routes. To create a safer work zone, speed limits will be reduced to 45 mph.

What to expect

From 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5, to 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, crews will close up to three left lanes of westbound I-90 to repair three bridges over Front Street North, Fourth Avenue Northwest/East Lake Sammamish Trail and Issaquah Creek (mileposts 18 to 16).

The following week, from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, to 8 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, crews will close the two right lanes of westbound I-90 to complete the other half of the work on the same bridges. The westbound I-90 off-ramp to Front Street will close from 9 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12, to 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, with a signed detour using the westbound I-90 off-ramp to 17th Avenue Northwest.

Two more westbound I-90 lane reductions are tentatively scheduled the weekends of Sept. 19-21 and Sept. 26-28. The bridge over Tibbets Creek and the Fourth Avenue Northwest on-ramp bridge from Front Street will be repaired during those lane reductions.

This work needs dry weather and may be rescheduled due to rain or inclement conditions.
