ROCKVILLE, MD — On Wednesday, August 27, First Lady Dawn Moore visited Ritchie Park Elementary School and Cold Spring Elementary School in Montgomery County to reinforce the Moore-Miller administration’s commitment to building a world-class education system in Maryland. She was joined by Maryland State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carey M. Wright, Maryland State Delegate Julie Palakovich-Carr, Montgomery County Councilmember Andrew Frierson, Rockville Mayor Monique Ashton, Montgomery County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Thomas Taylor, and members of the Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education.
“While walking the halls and visiting classrooms today in Rockville, I was truly inspired by the excitement of our young students as they start the next chapter in their educational journey,” said First Lady Moore. “Our administration knows that our children are the future, and we remain committed to building a world-class public education system in Maryland that uplifts the hopes and dreams of every student.”
The visits were part of the First Lady’s ongoing commitment to uplifting Maryland’s children and families by spotlighting innovative learning environments and the educators who make them thrive. At each school, the First Lady met with students, teachers, and administrators to learn more about their innovative learning environments — while highlighting the importance of student engagement, community connection, and educational excellence in Maryland’s public schools.
Dr. Wright emphasized the importance of presence and partnership in education.
“When we show up for our students, we send a powerful message that their education matters,” said Dr. Wright. “I’m proud to join First Lady Moore in recognizing the dedication of Montgomery County educators and the promise of our students. Together, we are building a future where every child has the opportunity to succeed.”
The First Lady’s visit aligns with her broader efforts to promote children’s mental health, educational equity, and community enrichment across Maryland. Supporting the administration, her office continues to work closely with state and local partners to ensure that schools are safe, inclusive, and empowering spaces for all students.
The Moore-Miller administration is committed to ensuring that every child has the right to a high-quality education in Maryland. For the third year in a row, there have been historic investments in K-12 education, investing nearly $10 billion into public schools this year alone. Also this year, the Excellence in Maryland Public Schools Act was signed into law to support our educators by expanding debt-free pathways to becoming a teacher. The legislation also establishes a coaching model for educators to learn the best practices in teaching math and reading. Maryland students have improved on national math and reading assessments, significantly in fourth-grade reading.
