A long-simmering debate over the future of court reporters in California has openly erupted, with licensed stenographers and court executives waging public campaigns in recent weeks over differing visions of how courtroom proceedings should be recorded. On Nov. 2, 54 trial court executives issued a joint press release describing a shortage of court reporters as a “crisis” that cannot be solved by additional funding because “there is no one to hire.”
