Information security e-learning gains popularity with US firms

IT Governance Ltd, the ISO27001 and information security experts announced growing popularity of their Information Security Staff Awareness e-learning course with US firms.

/EINPresswire.com/ Many cyber attacks are targeted at members of staff. Cybercriminals are likely to exploit the vulnerability of the system and lure employees into clicking on a link to a malicious website or downloading a file loaded with malware. The human error factor is a huge problem for many firms where staff is unaware of their responsibilities when downloading web content and tend to be negligent when dealing with sensible information.

The examples of confidential information being compromised are numerous. Recently, the Texas Comptroller's Office saw the names, addresses, and social security numbers of state retirees and unemployment beneficiaries posted, unencrypted, on a public server. At about the same time, a computer containing personal information was stolen from the Saint Francis Health System in Oklahoma, thus compromising the records of 84,000 patients. Earlier this year, another US organization, Health Net, revealed that about 1.9 million current and former customer records have been lost. It had taken Health Net as long as six months to notify customers of the data loss, thus violating the State Security Breach Notice Act.

Last week the Senate introduced a federal Bill which, if enacted (and, sooner or later, it will be) it will impose strict data security measures. US-based companies would be required to report data breaches that threaten consumer privacy and could face stiff penalties for concealing them. Companies should familiarize themselves with the relevant state breach laws (http://www.ncsl.org) and take immediate action to protect themselves from cyber attacks. It is recommended that staff training is one of the first measures they should implement as part of a wider cyber security strategy.

E-learning is a proven technique in educating staff in fundamental information security principles, and it has the capacity to enhance any organization's cyber security to protect it from falling prey to cyber attacks directed at stealing privileged business information.

Obvious benefits such as flexible and customisable features, lack of travelling or other course attendance costs, and the convenience for employees to study from the desk top and in their spare time, make it an ideal option for small and large firms.

An established information security expert firm, IT Governance offers Information Security Staff Awareness e-learning course (www.itgovernanceusa.com/product/1101.aspx) designed to create awareness in the organization around security issues. The course not only familiarizes the learners with the basics of information security, including security threats via emails, the Internet and at the workplace, but also introduces the learners to the policies on incident reporting and responses.

"Information security is critical in the current business environment," says Alan Calder, CEO of IT Governance. "Our non-technical course is easily digestible whilst it helps employees to understand the implications of their actions and be mindful of these in their daily activities. We believe it will add value to every organization and is a significant step forward in terms of quality and traceability of staff awareness training."

The 40-minute Information Security Staff Awareness e-learning course is a comprehensive course which has been developed drawing on ITG's track record of delivering staff awareness courses to client organizations. Employers can track training across all members of staff, whilst employees can evidence their understanding of the subject by passing the integral online test which is accompanied by a certificate. Employees who are involved in processing information, use information technology in their daily job or who use the Internet as a means of conducting business will benefit highly form this course.

One-year user licences can be purchased individually for just $70 each or in bulk at discounted prices, here www.itgovernanceusa.com/product/1101.aspx . For larger numbers of users, a customisable version of the course is available which enables clients to closely tie the e-learning content to their own procedures and culture.
