Austin, Texas (CaymanMama.com) — The American Medical Association (AMA) is taking a stand in support of doctors’ ability to talk about the issue of obesity with their overweight patients.

Under a new policy adopted Tuesday, the organization will now formally oppose efforts by obesity advocacy groups to define the condition.

According to the Associated Press, “Doctors fear using that definition makes them vulnerable under disability laws to lawsuits from obese patients who don’t want their doctors to discuss their weight.”

Physicians took the action during an annual meeting in Chicago.

Also on Tuesday, the AMA said it would lobby for legislation to prohibit the sale of tobacco products in pharmacies.
