Jackson, Mississippi (CaymanMama.com) — The rivalry between Google and Microsoft may be reaching new heights, sending the software giant running for cover. The buzz regarding a new Google desktop operating system to compliment Android, Google’s mobile OS, has been persistent. But the threat to Microsoft is all too real.

In the later part of this year, Google will begin the official launch of Google Chrome OS, an operating system created from the ground up to run the Chrome web browser on netbooks.

“It’s our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be,” Google wrote in its blog. “However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web.” Obviously, a hit to Microsoft.

As netbooks become more and more popular, the constant operating system is Windows XP, an 8-year old program. In addition, XP was built to run on Pentium IIIs and Pentium 4s, while Google Chrome OS was developed to run on both x86 architecture chips and ARM chips, such as those found in netbooks. It is also working with multiple OEMs to get the new OS up and running next year.

Google states, “We have a lot of work to do, and we’re definitely going to need a lot of help from the open source community to accomplish this vision.”

On that note, Google is expected to release the open source code for Chrome OS later this year prior to the official launch next year. Some are saying that the code will drop around the same block of time that Windows 7 comes out.

That should make Microsoft none too pleased. Let the games begin!
