Amazon to proceed with Kindle lawsuit settlement
Columbus, Ohio (CaymanMama.com) — Seattle-based online retailer, Amazon.com has consented to settle a lawsuit filed by a high school student over the deletion of an e-book he purchased for his Kindle e-book reader from the online store.
Justin D. Gawronski, 17, filed a lawsuit against Amazon after it wiped out Kindle-friendly copies on customer’s devices of the George Orwell novels “1984″ and “Animal Farm” in July.
Amazon said it made the deletion after encountering a problem with rights to the e-books and issued refunds to customers.
Gawronski was reading “1984″ for a class he was taking and his suit asserted that the removal of the e-book from his Kindle rendered the electronic notes he had taken useless.
According to the Associated Press, “In the settlement, which was filed this week in a U.S. District Court in Seattle, Amazon agreed that it won’t remotely delete books from U.S. users’ Kindles except for in a few specified situations. A judge still has to approve the proposed deal.”
