Boston, Massachusetts (CaymanMama.com) — A violent, 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit the scenic Indonesian islands, of off the coast of the town of Padang on Wednesday evening, killing at least 13 people and injuring scores more, according to a local official.

Those who lost their lives were crushed by collapsing buildings, said Rustam Pakaya, head of the Ministry of Health’s crisis center.

Emergency officials say that thousands more people are still trapped under fallen structures.

According to the Associated Press, “Officials said the quake triggered a landslide that cut off land transport to the area closest to the epicenter.”

The earthquake hit at around 5 p.m. approximately 33 miles from Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra, a city that is home to over 800,000 people. Citizens lost power and phone, making it hard to determine the actual scope of the damage.

An Indonesian-run Antara news agency reported that the quake “killed tens of people and destroyed hundreds of buildings including houses, shopping centers and mosques.”

The devastating quake ran along the same fault line which produced the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
