Gov. Herbert issues declaration in recognition of Veterans Day

– In commemoration of Veterans Day, Governor Gary R. Herbert issued a declaration honoring all Utahns who have served in uniform.

“In Utah, we proudly honor and recognize all those who have worn the uniform. Today and every day we salute and thank Veterans in Utah for their sacrifice,” said Gov. Gary R. Herbert. “Thank you for inspiring us to rise and meet the challenges of our time and for paving the way for our children and our grandchildren to be able meet theirs.”

The governor issued the following proclamation in recognition of Veterans Day:

Whereas, on November 11, we come together as a nation to commemorate the service and sacrifice of our veterans who have worn our country’s uniform to defend and preserve our precious liberty and freedoms;

Whereas, 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War, and 45th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War;

Whereas, we affirm our duty as citizens to express our enduring gratitude, both in words and in actions, for the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen who have served our country;

Whereas, nearly 140,000 veterans call Utah home, including more than 60,000 who served in the current conflict and first Gulf War, more than 25,000 who served in peacetime and Cold War, 43,000 who served in Vietnam, 9,000 who served in Korea and 3,700 who served in World War II;

Whereas, we take pride in the social, economic, and cultural contributions our military and veterans make in Utah;

Whereas, we thank the families of our Veterans for the sacrifices they have made;

Whereas, we recognize the important contributions the Veterans and their families have made to our great state;

Whereas, both men and women of our armed forces continue to be an inspiration to all of us through their demonstration of courage, leadership and commitment in service to our state and country; and,

Whereas, we proudly honor and recognize all those who have worn the uniform, today and every day we salute and thank Veterans in Utah for their sacrifice;

 Now, Therefore, I, Gary R. Herbert, Governor of the great state of Utah, do hereby declare November 11, 2020 as, Veterans Day in Utah.

The governor also invited Utahns to participate in the #HonorUtahVeterans initiative and celebrate Veterans Day virtually this year.

“Due to COVID-19, we cannot come together to celebrate, honor and thank veterans for their service and sacrifice,” said Gov. Herbert. “Despite the fact we cannot be physically together, it is important we go out of our way to recognize our veterans. In our urgency to respond to the coronavirus, it’s easy to lose sight of the terrible toll isolation is taking on veterans in our community, especially older veterans who may live alone or in a long-term care facility.”
