Work Continues on Cambridge Springs Bridge in Crawford County

Work on the new the bridge that will carry Route 6 over French Creek in Cambridge Springs Borough, Crawford County continues with construction of the superstructure.

The new bridge, which is located on Route 6 (Main Street) between the intersections with McClellan Street and Route 408 (Church Street), replaces the former 119-year-old structure that was closed in November 1, 2019 due to the poor condition. The old steel truss bridge was removed in early 2020.

Placement of the first span of beams on the northern side of the bridge is expected to take place October 12, 2020, weather permitting. The work that day will require some traffic delays and possible stoppages between the bridge and the intersection of Route 6 and Route 19.

The second span of beams on the southern end of the bridge is expected to be placed starting November 4, 2020. During that work, traffic delays and stoppages may occur between the bridge and the intersection of Route 6 and Route 408.

Once the beams are in place, work will move to pouring the concrete deck, barriers, and roadway approaches.

The overall construction schedule for the bridge has been adjusted. The new bridge is expected to open in the spring after the final asphalt paving is complete. Work on the curb ramps, sidewalks and pavement markings is also anticipated to be complete in spring 2021.

In connection with the work, a pedestrian detour is posted using Railroad Street, Grant Street (Route 1025) and McClellan Street (Route 1006). A vehicle detour remains in place using Grant Street and McClellan Street.

The contractor is Clearwater Construction, Inc. of Mercer, PA. The contract cost is $3,816,000, which is to be paid with 20 percent state funds and 80 percent federal funds.
