Today, the Washington State Department of Health is confirming that Secretary of Health John Wiesman submitted his resignation to Governor Inslee on March 1, 2020 to be effective at the end of the Governor’s second term on January 10, 2021. This was announced to all department staff, key legislators, and key partners two days later. Given the long nature of his resignation and that at the very time the COVID-19 response was accelerating, we decided to keep the focus on COVID, not on Dr. Wiesman’s future plans.

“There is much work that remains to be done in the upcoming eight months before I leave this position. Most pressing, and job number one, is continuing to mount a strong, coordinated response to the COVID-19 disease outbreak here in Washington State so we can have a safe start to reopening the economy and protecting the public’s health. This is a challenging, rapidly changing unprecedented public health crisis. However, I know that as a state we will lead through the challenges and pull together to minimize its impact, the best we can,” said Secretary of Health John Wiesman.

Prior to the start of the COVID-19 response, Secretary Wiesman accepted a faculty appointment at the University of North Carolina, Gillings School of Global Public Health beginning July 2021. This was communicated to department staff and partner organizations in March and we have since been focused on our coordinated statewide response to COVID-19.

“Serving as the secretary of health under Governor Inslee’s leadership has been a true honor, and leading the dedicated employees of the Department of Health is an opportunity I have treasured. As public servants, we have shared the commitment to do right by the people of our state, and to do our best to improve the lives of all of our residents. I look forward to serving as your secretary of health through the end of the year.”
