MONTGOMERY— A $78,440 Community Development Block Grant awarded by Gov. Kay Ivey will help Midland City in Dale County extend public sewer service to serve a local business and future business along U.S. Highway 231.

The city will use grant funds to extend sewer service to an area along the west side of U.S. Highway 231 occupied by Dixieland Dental which is currently experiencing many problems with a faulty septic system, including frequent clogging of pumps and sewage backups. The city will install 200 feet of sewer force mains and 130 feet of steel casing and upgrade the existing lift station.

The project also will create opportunities for growth along the west side of U.S. Highway 231 by enabling the extension of public sewer service to several commercial lots near Dixieland Dental.

“Helping local businesses retain jobs and creating new opportunities for the future is a vital part of my administration,” Ivey said. “I am pleased to award this grant which will help not only this business, but also other businesses that move into the immediate area.” 

Dixieland Dental has been in its current location since 1999 and serves more than 80 patients per day. The project will help retain the 31 employees who work for the business.  

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available to the state by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Ivey in her commitment to helping rural communities expand needed services to local businesses to better serve residents and retain jobs,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “ADECA partners with cities like Midland City through the Community Development Block Grant program to help build a better future for the state.”

ADECA administers an array of programs that support law enforcement and traffic safety, economic development, energy conservation, water resource management and recreation development. Ivey notified Midland City Mayor JoAnn Grimsley the grant had been approved. Local matching funds of $46,760 will supplement the grant.
