MONTGOMERY— Gov. Kay Ivey has awarded a $19,639 grant to help the Alabama Supreme Court purchase upgraded equipment for its law enforcement marshals.

The court will use the grant funds to buy new equipment including body cams, body armor, Tasers and radios. The marshals provide safety and security service for the state’s judicial branch including the Supreme Court, Alabama Appellate Courts, Law Library and the Unified Judicial System.

“Our court system’s law enforcement marshals put themselves in harms way to protect those working diligently to seek justice in our state, and it is vital that they have the most up-to-date equipment so they can perform their jobs safely and effectively,” Gov. Ivey said. “I am pleased to assist the Alabama Supreme Court in obtaining this equipment for the marshals.”

The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant from funds made available by the U.S. Department of Justice. ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, infrastructure upgrades, recreation, energy conservation, water resources management and career development.

“ADECA supports Gov. Ivey’s efforts to properly equip the law enforcement officers who protect and serve all of us,” ADECA Director Kenneth Boswell said. “This grant will provide necessary equipment to keep our courtrooms safe.”

Gov. Ivey notified Rich Hobson, administrative director of courts, that the grant had been approved.
