COLUMBIA, MD, UNITED STATES, May 13, 2019 /EINPresswire.com/ -- At the 2019 American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS) Annual Meeting in Dallas, TX, the ASBrS Foundation announced winners of its grant awards and scientific awards. The grants provide critical support for underserved populations. The ASBrS Foundation also helped bring Academy Award winning actress Kathy Bates to deliver the meeting’s keynote address, sharing her message about lymphedema from a patient’s perspective.

“Our grants make a difference in the lives of thousands of patients in need each year and support research that can make an impact for years to come,” said Beth Boyd, RN, Chairman of the ASBrS Foundation. “We’re honored to support these great programs that help men and women affected by breast cancer and other breast issues, saving lives and improving their quality of life.”

The ASBrS Foundation announced the following grant and award winners at the Annual Meeting:

Community Outreach:
o “Breast Health Outreach & Education Program,” Health Community Coalition, Maine
o “BEAT – Breast Health Education Access and Treatment,” TOPPS, Inc., Arkansas

Education:
o “Breast Health & Cancer Education in Rural Central Washington,” Kittitas Valley Healthcare, Washington

Research:
o “Understanding Patients’ Perspectives on Factors that Contribute to Socioeconomic Disparities in the Receipt of Post-Mastectomy Breast Reconstruction,” University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health

George Peters Award for the best presentation by a fellow: Susie Sun, MD, The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Institute, Houston, TX, for “Patient selection for non-operative management of HER2+ invasive breast cancer after neoadjuvant systemic therapy”

Scientific Presentation Award for the best presentation by a fellow, resident, or medical trainee: Olga Kantor, MD, University of Chicago, for “Physician Knowledge of Contralateral Breast Cancer and Local Recurrence Risk Is Associated with Increased Recommendations for Contralateral Prophylactic Mastectomy: A Survey of Physicians at NAPBC Accredited Centers”

The ASBrS Foundation also sponsors the Keynote Speaker at the Annual Meeting. Actress Kathy Bates, this year’s Keynote Speaker, gave an inspiring performance.
