1) Have an idea of what you want.

"Most printers can take your idea and turn it into exactly what you want, but they do need something to start with. You can take a print-ready project to your printer. 2) Ask for samples of past work.

Kangani said samples tell a lot about the printer. She suggested getting a magnifying glass to look closely at the print job. Some key points he said to check are:

• Alignment in multi-color documents. Make sure the color is lined up correctly.

• Bleed. How much does the ink bleed into the paper? Too much bleed or spread makes the image blurry.

• Paper. Does the paper fit the print project? Bear in mind some customers will ask for a cheaper paper that is really not suited for the project.

3) Check with previous customers.

Nothing speaks louder or better than customers, Kangani said. If the print shop is good, it will have reviews and plenty of customer testimonials.

"This goes back to experience. Print shops with experience and eye to customer service will have plenty of people talking about how happy they are with the work," she said.

4) Get job quotes.

Call several shops and get prices. To be fair, a quote request should state the amount of printing, the colors needed and the paper stock needed for the project.

Kangani said to be particularly wary of prices that are much lower or much higher than the average. Depending on the size of the project, the final bill should always be within 10 percent of the estimate.

"The estimate may be exactly on, depending on what you order. Something like, 1,000 business cards is an exact price every time. But if you turn in a project and the printer has to do more work than the estimate called for, then you may pay a bit more. At the same time, the printer should call you and let you know he's doing extra work and what that should cost," he said.
