This year, internationally recognized expert on sentencing issues in capital and child murder cases, Dr. Mark Cunningham, will present a 2-day workshop on Evaluations for High Stakes Sentencing: Capital and Juvenile Murder Cases.

Landmark U.S. Supreme Court cases have mandated individualized sentencing when the death penalty is sought or a defendant is facing a life-without-parole for an offense committed as a juvenile. Mental health professionals are routinely called upon to assist in illuminating the associated considerations of moral culpability and specific deterrence. This workshop discusses four specific high stakes sentencing contexts—evaluation for capital mitigation, capital violence risk assessment for prison, evaluation of intellectual disability, and evaluation in juvenile murder cases—and describes conceptual underpinnings, evaluation procedures, relevant research literature, and the analysis/integration of case data for each. Participants will be provided with extensive illustration of how evaluation findings can be effectively communicated in reports and slide-assisted testimony.
