SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES, June 5, 2018 / -- A global settlement may be on the horizon for hundreds of lawsuits involving the drug Abilify. The lawsuits allege the antipsychotic medication caused people to gamble compulsively, or engage in other compulsive behaviors like compulsive shopping and eating.

News of the settlement comes after drug maker Otsuka Pharmaceuticals and marketer Bristol-Myers Squibb agreed to settle the first three cases set to go to trial in the Abilify multidistrict litigation.

Those trials were slated as bellwether trials and were settled for undisclosed amounts. There are roughly 800 lawsuits still pending in the Abilify MDL. After the three bellwethers settled, the federal judge overseeing the litigation issued an order telling the two parties they had until Sept. 1 to finalize a global settlement.

The judge’s May 2 order speeds up the timeline for some of the federally filed Abilify lawsuits. In spite of the order, the statute of limitations has run out on about 65 percent of those who would be eligible for an Abilify lawsuit. This means time is running out to inquire about these cases and to file a claim.

Abilify is an antipsychotic medication prescribed to treat disorders such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and major depression. It is often prescribed off-label to treat other conditions like anxiety and post-traumatic stress.

Schmidt National Law Group is actively filing Abilify lawsuits on behalf of people who took the drug and experienced compulsive behaviors such as compulsive gambling, shopping, eating, and sexual actions.

Attorney Martin Schmidt says filing an Abilify lawsuit is the only way people can seek justice for their suffering because there is no recourse for individuals from the regulatory agency who approves these harmful drugs.

“The Food and Drug Administration doesn’t provide any remedy whatsoever for the person that was harmed by a pharmaceutical drug that failed, and the only person who can really help them is a plaintiff attorney who is experienced in dealing with medical devices and drugs,” says Schmidt.

Schmidt National Law Group is experienced in dealing with bad drugs and is filing cases against the manufacturer of the drug Abilify. Call Schmidt National Law Group toll free at 800-631-5656 or visit to see if you qualify for an Abilify lawsuit.
