SHERBROOKE, QUEBEC, CANADA, March 20, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Considering that more than 40% of the world’s population lives in remote or developing areas, the “Richard J. Marceau Chair on Wireless IP Technology for Developing Countries” research chair helps countries move forward with some of their social and economic challenges by providing Internet access to all.
The Chair is developed by the École de Technologie Supérieure – ÉTS (Université du Québec) and collaborates with SmartLand Initiative, launched by the Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL), in Ecuador. Under the leadership of François Gagnon, Professor in Electrical Engineering at ÉTS, the research helps people access the Internet, especially in developing countries and isolated regions such as the Amazon and South America, where the pilot project took place.
“We wouldn’t be doing this project without Media5’s partnership and sponsorship. The company’s contribution is a key element to this project’s viability and creates a strong link between academic and industrial researches creating a win-win relation. Throughout this initiative, Media5 is helping to create direct and indirect jobs, promoting social development, economic growth, and innovative technologies”, states Professor Gagnon.

CHALLENGE AND DEVELOPMENT
The Internet is a significant medium for economic, cultural, political, and educational development. By having access to the Internet, many populations will benefit from online services in healthcare, education, finance, communications, etc. Furthermore, economically, these populations will be able to play in a competitive, internationally accessible, and high-performance digital workspace.
According to Professor Gagnon, the main challenge is to use infrastructures that were set up in these countries and isolated regions – some twenty years ago – and modernise them to transmit not only voice communications but also data, at a lower cost and completely secure, without adversely affecting the environment.
The Richard J. Marceau Chair was launched in March 2016 and its research will have a 5-year span. In addition to the sponsorship, Media5 contributes with its technology and solutions for IP communications and broadens its portfolio with the key technology developed as part of this program.
