STATEN ISLAND, NY, UNITED STATES, February 27, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School, will host its second annual robotics competition for elementary schools that participate in its High School Preparatory Program. Sea is currently the only Catholic High School on Staten Island to participate in FRC Robotics, the most advanced level of the Nationwide FIRST Robotics Competition. The event is designed to mimic that of the nationwide competition, in order to encourage elementary schools to launch their own FIRST Lego League Program.

“The competition was a great success last year,” said Father Reilly, Principal of St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School. “It’s an exciting way elementary school students to get hand on experience related to engineering, science and math, while at the same time allowing them to have fun.”

Mr. Michael Consolmagno and Mrs. Jacqueline Lauria, both Associate Directors of Development, have been working with the elementary schools to prepare them for the competition. Sea provided each of the schools with a FIRST Lego League Robotics Starter Kit, and has been working hand in hand with the students on building and programming their prototypes.

“Our Prep Program gives 7th and 8th graders an advantage by exposing them to things, such as robotics, that they will encounter on the High School level,” said Mr. Consolmagno. “There were more than 700 people in attendance at last year’s competition and we’re looking forward to another great turnout this year.”

The competition will take place on Monday, February 27th from 5pm-8pm at St. Joseph by-the-Sea High School and more than $2,000 in prizes will be awarded for multiple categories including School Spirit, Safety and others. The list of Catholic Elementary Schools participating includes St. Adalbert, St. Christopher, Holy Rosary, St. Joseph St. Thomas, Our Lady Help of Christians, Our Lady Star of the Sea, St. Patrick, St. Rita, and Sacred Heart. Last year’s First Place winners were the St. Christopher’s Power Cougars.
