New Group Announces Certification for Consumer Product Safety Field
The Society of Product Safety Professionals was formed by a group of industry safety personnel to expand professional development opportunities
ORLANDO, FLORIDA, USA, February 21, 2017 /EINPresswire.com/ -- A group of consumer product safety professionals has announced the establishment of the Society of Product Safety Professionals (SPSP), a not- for-profit organization that will offer certification programs to individuals employed in product safety positions by consumer product manufacturers, retailers, and distributors (www.productsafetyprofessionals.com).The group made this announcement at an annual symposium held in Orlando, Florida by the International Consumer Product Health & Safety Organization, an organization comprised of various stakeholders in the product safety area, including industry, service providers, standards organizations, industry associations, social advocates, educators, and regulators.
SPSP will also provide professional development education programs and other activities that will advance the skills and abilities of professionals in the consumer product safety field.
SPSP will offer its first certification examination in the fourth quarter of 2017 to a pilot group. Successful applicants will meet the background and experience requirements of the organization and pass an examination of qualifying questions developed by an independent committee established by SPSP to support the certification program. The certification will attest to the competency of individuals in designing and managing a compliance plan within a company.
Consumer product manufacturers, retailers, and distributors are under the regulatory authority of the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission
which is charged with protecting the public from unreasonable risks of injury or death associated with the use of thousands of types of consumer products under the agency’s jurisdiction.
The organizing group, all graduates of Saint Louis University’s product safety management certificate courses, consisted of the following individuals: John Barrera, Amazon.com; Larry Bell, Bosch Home Appliances; Sherri Cain, Hobby Lobby; Sheila Gottschalk, Hallmark; Nivi Gravette, Walmart; Norma Jean DeSpain, H-E- B; Joan Rubendall, WellSpring Pharmaceutical, and Catherine Wernecke, Target. Dr. Ik-Whan Kwon of Saint Louis University, and Don Kornblet, advisor to the university’s product safety courses, supported the group.
The Society will follow the guidelines of ISO/IEC 17024, Conformity assessment – General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons, which provides a global
benchmark for personnel certification programs to ensure that they operate in a consistent,comparable and reliable manner worldwide, thereby allowing individuals to have skills that translate across national lines.
