American Muslim Institution Appeal to President Trump to Rescind Executive Order Relating to Ban on Muslims Traveling from Certain Countries

February 2, 2017, Washington, DC – The American Muslim Institution (AMI) appeals to and urges President Trump to rescind his executive order banning refugees from entering the United States, halting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries, whiuch has also led to harassing of American citizens and legal residents. We further request the U.S. Congress and Senate to take immediate action to freeze the multiplier effect caused by the hasty implementation of this executive order.

“AMI is committed to be a proactive voice for American Muslims, and our actions, writings and talks are geared to achieve the ultimate goal, where Americans will see Muslims as their neighbors and fellow citizens, committed to fighting against violent extremism and protecting the homeland,” said Islam Siddiqui, President of The American Muslim Institution.

Lack of clarity, consultation and communications with the implementers of such order has produced unabated harassment of our citizens and legal residents at airports and on the streets of our nation, causing insecurity, fear and painful separation of families.

The order is inconsistent with American values and stigmatizes and weakens American Muslim communities. “No American family should have to live in fear, tension and insecurity. It is our duty to keep law and order and faithfully guard the safety of every citizen. The order severely affects the social fabric of our nation, dividing and pitting one American against the other. The order may actually lead to chaos and the need for more law enforcement personnel to maintain the safety of all Americans”, said Dr. Aquilur Rahman, Chairman, American Mulsim Institution.

The ban on Syrian refugees, blocking people from the seven nations, and the harassment of Americans residents on the streets and in airports are counterproductive to our long- cherished history of welcoming refugees and other immigrants from all over the world. The order also appears on its face to be in violation of our Constitution under the equal protection clause, as it identifies a particular class of people.
