"Plus, who's to say the bad guys will honor their commitment to unlocking your data as promised?"
Moreover, the FBI reports that some victims have been asked to pay more after the first payment and others have been targeted by other cybercriminals.
According to Rich, prevention is the best approach to stemming the rising tide of ransomware.
"It starts with exceptional computer security software along with cybersecurity awareness training. Software can counteract most attacks, but users need to be aware of potentially dangerous practices that could inadvertently allow malware to break in," he said. "A good data backup system is the best insurance. If you're backing up your data continuously and storing data offsite, you'll be able to recover quickly without having to consider paying a ransom."
