Marconi Water Tower, Kickstarting the Birthplace of Modern Radio
CHELMSFORD, UNITED KINGDOM , April 21, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Every community has its own events and people which leave a unique footprint on culture and history. In the case of Chelmsford much of that history is intertwined with being the birthplace of modern radio. Chelmsford Community Radio is a not for profit community interest company which is dedicated to both serving the Chelmsford area and preserving this heritage.
Guglielmo Marconi is the inventor of modern wireless and transmitted Britain’s first official radio broadcast from Chelmsford in 1920. The Marconi factory was opened in 1908 and worked to invent and design radio technology until it closed in the 1990s. The original factory has now been demolished and turned into a residential area. The historic Marconi Water Tower, which supplied the factory for nearly a century, has remained idle but unscathed. In a nod to the past, Chelmsford Community Radio has been granted a tremendous opportunity by gaining the use of the tower for its programming. Spurred on by this support Chelmsford Community Radio now has ambitions of being broadcast on FM radio. They are now in the final stages of an application for an FM broadcasting frequency. This significant step is expected to happen later this year. Chelmsford Community Radio is available for your mobile phone right now on mixcloud.com and tunein.com.
The goal of this new venture is to turn the new studios at the Marconi Water Tower into a forward-thinking centre of innovation which will never forget to celebrate radio history. In order to complete the move the building needs to be renovated. The new design will ensure that it takes advantage of the space. As they are storage spaces, water towers feature very high rooms. The updated building is going to add a mezzanine floor. This would create a spot for the brand new Chelmsford Community Radio Academy. Adding a radio academy in Chelmsford would allow people to take accredited audio courses at the birthplace of radio. The courses are in the development stage but they will all teach broadcasting skills to people of all ages and experience. The station is driven to empower everyone and two of the most popular shows on air are made by people with learning disabilities. This is quality radio made by quality people. Chelmsford Community Radio aims to be an inclusive environment and intends to install an accessible studio environment for people of all physical capabilities.
Chelmsford Community Radio is powered by the hard work of over a hundred volunteers. Powered by people who are determined to assist their community, the station now produces over 50 hours of live local programming each week. This programming covers a wide variety of stories featuring different projects and events. Chelmsford Community Radio also includes music, news, sports, travel and weather. This formula has gained thousands of listeners since 2013 who follow the station through its broadcasting over the Internet to computers, smartphones, eReaders, tablets and social media relays. The station strives daily to promote good causes and share community achievement by working with businesses and espousing education. Community initiatives have included providing Christmas programming to six Chelmsford schools in order to celebrate the holiday season. The station has also covered the local Essex Police Board Christmas Concert. The radio station has gained access to an outreach studio truck and will continue broadcasting directly from schools and community groups.
Chelmsford Community Radio represents the only station broadcasting directly from the birthplace of modern radio. It is also a radio station which consistently makes a positive impact on its community. Chelmsford Community Radio deserves to grow. In order to support this historically significant opportunity a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign has been set in place until June 13th. As part of this campaign a donation of 10 British Pounds comes with the chance to join history. Upon making this donation funders will be able to send a photograph of themselves to the studio. This photograph will be included on the Wall of Fame in Studio 1 at the Marconi Water Tower. This will become part of a giant collage which will form a mosaic on the wall of the main studio. For a crowdfunding donation of 15 British Pounds Chelmsford Community Radio will play an unsigned song at the request of the funder. In addition the station will grant a mention on air. This will also include a link to the listen again service to allow for replay as desired. Every single donation made will be celebrated through on air broadcasts.
