eTN Publisher issues statement on fallen journalists: "Their deaths should not be in vain"
Why the global travel and tourism industry should not be quiet on the murder of French journalists
Publisher of eTurboNews (eTN) Juergen Thomas Steinmetz said: “We all live in a global world. The travel and tourism industry is a global business, a connector of people; as Dubai-based Emirates airlines says, It’s peace through tourism, and it’s a tourism industry of understanding and communication.”
"Freedom of expression is an essential part of the global travel and tourism industry as well. As a global publication with readers in almost every country of the world, eTN understands and has worked for 15 years to bring this world together. We don’t believe the travel and tourism media should just report about new hotels or swimming pools, but about international issues relevant to everyone who travels and is trying to see the world in a global view and who may be affected by international events.
As an independent media publication, eTN has been outspoken many times when others were quiet. What happened today to our media colleagues in Paris is an unspeakable act and a deliberate attack on the freedom that journalists should enjoy in every corner of the globe. This was not an attack by a government trying to undermine this freedom, but by a group of criminals hiding and using a respected religion to justify their unspeakable acts.
As the fallen journalists for Charlie Hebdo did, all people in the global media industry must continue to speak up and not be discouraged to keep reporting their views. eTN welcomes the statement by United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon who called this attack “a horrendous, unjustifiable and cold-blooded crime,” and in response to today’s event, “I think an international agreed-upon system of ‘journalist’ immunity should be granted, similar to an immunity diplomats enjoy worldwide,” said eTN’s publisher. “I think it is time for global travel and tourism leaders to join in and condemn this attack. We wait to see how our leaders react to this situation. Freedom of expression – this is what we believe in here at eTurboNews – and is what we are standing behind.”
eTN relates its condolences to the family of the victims in this crime. "We consider everyone who died today a hero. Their deaths should not be in vain", said the eTN publisher.
