There will be a 4.3 inch LCD color touchscreen display which will show all of the important system information and have a real-time clock. All of this will be made available graphically through easy to follow charts. This makes it easy for a monthly budget for water usage to be added and tracked. The system has an option to release notifications if needed. The entire system can be accessed through a VPN connection which will be made available for Internet devices. Android and iPhone accessibility and Wi-Fi connectivity are also included. The web interface is intended to mirror the local display.
The system works by capturing real time water usage. This is done by clamping 1.2MHz ultrasonic measurement sensors to water pipes. The ultrasonic sensors are non-intrusive. These sensors are placed both upstream and downstream. They operate by sending an ultrasonic burst whenever water flows past the sensors. Keeping track of these bursts measures the speed of the water flow by calculating the volume of water used and the diameter of the pipe. The water volume is tracked every 500ms based on this measurement. This information will be wirelessly transmitted to the main processing module. This main module will be where all further calculation and control functions are housed.
