Pipeline construction begins at Messoyakha fields

CJSC Messoyakhaneftegaz has begun construction ofapressure-pipeline from the Messoyakha fields, located inthe north ofthe Yamalo-Nenetsk Autonomous Okrug, tothe Zapolyarye—Purpe pipeline network.

The oil pipeline— with amaximum capacity ofseven million tonnes per year and running toatotal length of96.5 kilometres— will belaid from both ends atthe same time. Transportation ofoil isexpected tobegin inlate 2016, following commissioning ofthe Vostochno (Eastern) Messoyakhskoye field. The developers have already signed apreliminary agreement with JSC Transneft onthe transportation ofoil via the Zapolyarye—Purpe system.

The Messoyakha-fields pressure pipeline

The Messoyakhskoye fields are the northernmost ofRussia’s most significant onshore oilfields. Project development ishaving tobeundertaken with full consideration ofthe need tominimise environmental impacts around Zapolyarye, aswell asguaranteeing optimum safety inthe operation ofthe oil transportation system, under extreme climatic conditions. Inparticular, inorder toprotect the layers ofthe permafrost, the pipeline isbeing constructed onspecial supports, and thermal stabilization ofthe soil undertaken. Asystem for the constant monitoring ofthe pipeline’s state and integrity will include aspecial fibre-optic cable, running the full length ofthe route: the oil pipeline will also beequipped with fire-prevention equipment, intruder alarms, and avideo surveillance system.

Crossing the routes ofthe Indikyakha and Muduiyakha rivers, the pipeline will berouted underground toavoid disturbing the riverbeds: directional drilling will beused tocreate the underground channels necessary for this. Fourteen through-ways and junctions will also beconstructed inthose areas impacted bythe migration ofdeer herds and travelling indigenous populations.

Construction ofthe pipeline has also received the approval ofstate building standards and quality-control agency Glavgosekspertiza. Inaddition towhich, following discussions with leaders ofreindeer-herding communities, the pipeline route selected will not cross valuable pastures vital totheir farming activities.

The Messoyakha fields include the Vostochno (Eastern) and Zapadno (Western) Messoyakhskoye acreages. Licences for prospecting and development atboth fields are held byMessoyakhaneftegaz, jointly owned byRosneft and Gazprom Neft. Gazprom Neft isthe operator onthe project. The fields, which were first discovered inthe 1980s, represent the northernmost and most significant onshore deposits inRussia. The Messoyakha fields are located inthe Gydan Peninsula, inthe Tazovsky district ofthe Yamalo-Nenetsk Autonomous Region, 340 kilometres north ofNovy Urengoy, inRussia’s Arctic zone— aregion ofconsiderably underdeveloped infrastructure. Proven C1and C2reserves indicate 465 million tonnes ofoil and gas condensate, aswell asmore than 170 billion cubic metres ofgas.
