Gazprom Neft Moscow Refineries cut carbon emissions by a third

11 September 2014

Transferring tocryogenic technology atthe Gazprom Neft Moscow and Omsk refineries, allowing the capture ofnitrogen used inproduction processes, has seen areduction inCO2 emissions by32percent atthe company’s Omsk refinery, and 28percent atits Moscow plant.

Previously, the production ofnitrogen required the burning ofnatural gas, resulting inthe production ofcarbon dioxide asaby-product. New ecological methods, however, use ultra-low temperatures allowing the capture ofnitrogen from the air. The purity ofthe gas produced through cryogenic technology isalmost 100percent, allowing ittobeused inafar wider range oftechnological processes inthe factory, particularly those dependent onthe quality ofthe nitrogen produced.

The production ofthe necessary volume ofhigh-quality nitrogen required the construction and commissioning ofacryogenic plant atthe Moscow Refinery, and the reconstruction ofanitrogen—oxygen producing facility atthe Omsk plant.
