POPI and ECTA advice published by IT Governance

New guidance has been published by IT Governance on South African data protection legislation, including POPI and the ECTA.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA, August 26, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- New guidance has been published by IT Governance, the global leaders in information security, risk management and compliance on South African data protection legislation, including the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) and the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act (ECTA).

This new content, which can be found on www.itgovernancesa.co.za/ , offers a unique aggregation of information, including details of the acts, key requirements, penalties and advice on compliance. The content is derived from primary sources of the legislation and various relevant secondary sources, with input from South African data protection experts.

Alan Calder, founder and executive chairman of IT Governance, comments on this new guidance, “The introduction of POPI means that South African organisations will need to implement a robust information security management system (ISMS). Secure processing of personal information is a key feature of POPI, and organisations will need to address the three fundamental domains of effective information security: people, process and technology.”

ISO27001 is the internationally recognised best-practice Standard that lays out the requirements of an ISMS and forms the backbone of every intelligent cyber security risk management strategy. POPI, ECTA, and other standards, frameworks and methodologies need ISO27001 in order to deliver their specific added value.

IT Governance has a strong track record in helping organisations from around the world strengthen their ISMS, while aligning it for government or contractual requirements. In fact, Calder and his colleague Steve Watkins, director of training and consultancy at IT Governance, were the first in the world to implement an ISMS in line with the international information security standard, ISO27001 (then BS7799).
