LONDON, LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM, August 7, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- In the run up to SMi’s 6th annual event on COPD, industry KOL Nithyanandan Nagercoil from the MHRA, was asked a few questions about the conference taking place on 20th and 21st October and about the COPD industry.

Dr Nithyanandan Nagercoil will be providing a keynote presentation on the regulatory perspective in clinical development of COPD medicines. The senior medical assessor will speak on regulatory expectations, providing an overview into EU versus US requirements and giving updates on recent advances, providing both legal guidance and a clinical perspective to the event.

His team primarily deals with Respiratory, dermatology and Ophthalmic products. Dr Nagercoil is responsible for the assessment of marketing authorisation applications and variations in these therapeutic areas. He is also one of the alternate members in the scientific advice working party of the EMA, where he mainly co-ordinates scientific advice procedures in respiratory and dermatology. Recent involvements include the clinical assessment of new and known active substances administered by inhalation for the management of COPD.

When asked about who he was most looking forward to hearing from at COPD 2014, Dr Nagercoil commented:

“I am particularly looking forward to Matthew Catley of AstraZeneca’s talk ‘New pathways for COPD’ and Medvivo’s Lawrence Gora on ‘Telehealth — experience of service delivery in COPD’ as both deal with recent developments and new methods which can shape the future in the understanding and management of COPD.”

“This years’ conference appears to address some recent developments and newer techniques that can be used to deliver management of COPD and gather clinical data to inform on treatment effects.”

When asked what he thought the biggest challenges are in the industry today, he said:

“Lack of a good understanding of the mediators involved in the progressive pathophysiology in COPD and the difficulties in demonstrating a clinically relevant long-term beneficial effect of a treatment in a progressive condition are the biggest challenges for the pharmaceutical industry in tackling COPD.”

“As the adverse socio-economic consequences of COPD increases, so will our efforts to effectively combat COPD. In the immediate future, though we may seem to be losing our battle in the fight against COPD; this will only strengthen our resolve and there will be an intensification of our research activity in trying to find effective treatments for COPD. So the future of COPD will depend on the successful outcomes of research & development in COPD.”
