Texas Recognizes National Work Zone Awareness Week

/EINPresswire.com/ Texas recently recognized National Work Zone Awareness Week. The Texas Department of Transportation joined with state leaders, the city of Austin, and members of the transportation industry to ask the public to, “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” TxDOT’s “Be Safe. Drive Smart.” campaign is designed to remind Texas drivers to slow down, stay alert, and observe traffic signs when approaching work zones.

Texas is a huge state, covered by highways and smaller roads. And, at any given time, up to 1,000 active work zones may be in place in Texas. For example, TxDOT currently has 20 active work zones along I-35 that cover over 100 miles. Accidents in these work zones can result in serious injuries and fatalities for drivers, passengers, and workers. In 2012, over 16,000 crashes occurred in roadway construction and maintenance zones in Texas. These crashes resulted in 134 fatalities. And, according to the Associated General Contractors of America, a recent survey found that a shocking 45 percent of Texas’ highway contractors had motor vehicles crash in their construction work zones during a one year period.

During National Work Zone Awareness Week, TxDOT’s permanent message signs along state highways and roadways advised drivers to use caution, be safe, and drive smart in work zones. Since work zone safety issues impact Texans in both urban and rural settings, these messages served as a reminder to all Texans that we should approach work zones with caution.
